During my years of travel this apt adage served as a very appropriate motto which can really apply to anyone who sets out to see the world. Today far more areas and countries are now easily accessible to the international traveller. Air transport has revolutionized the accessibility of even the most remote settlement. Cruise ships stimulate sleepy ports in romantic tropical islands, and trekking companies bring even the most isolated mountain valley and community into contact with the modern world of the International traveller.

The eminent 14th century traveller Ibn Battuta began his travel writings thus: “I left Tangier, my birthplace, with the intention of making the Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. Swayed by an over-mastering impulse within me, and a long-cherished desire to visit those glorious sanctuaries, I resolved to quit all my friends and tear myself away from my home.”
